FLOWERS FOR CEREMONIES AND CELEBRATIONS
Although lots of people work with us to make our project possible, From the Land’s directors are Su, Ellie and Jane.
All of our natural funeral designs are as unique and individual as the people they celebrate. Whether you want something in bright colours or more natural tones we can guide you through the process of creating something really special to remember your loved one. We can include flowers from your garden, or if there are flowers that h ave special significance to you or your loved one we will try our best to include them.
We can make floral tributes for you, or we can support you to work with flowers to create your own arrangements. We are happy for you to bring your own flowers to be part of the arrangement.
It’s hard to talk about funerals and we understand that knowing what kind of funeral flowers to order can be overwhelming. Funeral flowers can be an important part of grieving and often bring great comfort and beauty at a difficult time. They can capture the essence and character of a person when you can’t find the words.
We are committed to offering naturally styled funeral flowers using locally grown seasonal produce. We offer completely biodegradable and environmentally friendly alternatives to traditional funeral flowers that can be used as part of green/natural burials.
All our flowers are locally grown and seasonal, so please be aware that we will have a greater variety of fresh flowers in spring, summer and autumn, whilst in the winter we forage evergreen foliage from our land and infuse colour with a range of beautiful dried flowers and grasses. What we can’t supply from our own garden we will source locally and ethically.
A percentage of the cost of your arrangement will be used for providing free arrangements and arrangement-making sessions for those who cannot afford flowers for their loved ones funeral. Times are difficult for many of us, so if you are struggling financially please get in contact to access this service. We would love to hear from you.
WILLOW HEARTS AND CROSSES
These designs can be laid on top of a coffin or grave. Designs can be provided in a variety of colours using locally grown seasonal flowers. We use willow grown on our land and moss also gathered on our land as the base. We do not use any plastics or toxic floral foam for these tributes.
Prices start from £55
CASKET SPRAYS
These are also known as single or double ended sprays, or coffin toppers. This is a large arrangement placed on top of the coffin and can be made to fit any size of casket. This arrangement is designed to be viewed from above and the side. They can be made in any colour using seasonal flowers and if you would like this to be environmentally friendly we have foam-free alternatives.
Prices start from £85 per foot
FUNERAL SHEAF
This is also known as a tied sheaf or flat back bouquet. This is placed on top of the coffin and can be made to any size. Like the casket spray it is designed to be seen from above and the side. After the ceremony it can be put in a vase for relatives to keep. You can also use multiple sheaves to create a “casket spray” shape on top of the coffin, allowing more than one person to place the flowers on the casket.
Prices start from £95
WREATHS
Funeral wreaths are one of the most popular tributes. These can be placed on top or alongside the coffin or can be used to mark the anniversary of the death of a loved one. They are designed to be viewed from above and can be made in a variety of colours with seasonal flowers. If you would like your wreath to be biodegradable/foam free we can make a wreath using all natural materials such as string, moss and willow.
Prices start from £75
LIVING WREATHS
This is an alternative to traditional floral funeral wreaths where the design includes planted elements. It can be laid on a grave or form part of the main funeral ceremony. Ingredients can include things like spring bulbs, succulents, ivy or flowers such as pansy, primrose or cyclamen. These are a great option for keen gardeners, and because they are plants they should last longer than traditional flowers.
Prices start from £65
GARLANDS AND POSIES
Other options for funeral flowers include garlands to weave onto wicker coffins, small posies to be placed inside the casket or a basket of small posies or petals for guests to place on the casket or grave at the end of the ceremony. These can alternatively be placed on the coffin and then taken by the guests to the wake.
Prices for these designs are by quotation.
WHY LOCAL FLOWERS?
These days we are all much more aware of our carbon footprint and the effect of our way of life on climate change. From the Land aims to have a much smaller impact on the environment by not using imported materials and by cycling flowers to their destination within Bath wherever possible. In Winter we use dried flowers and evergreen foliage from our land, and if at any time we don’t have enough fresh flowers we source them from other local organic growers. We are a proud member of Bath Area Growers, a organisation where local growers can connect and support each other.
According the Flowers from the Farm website:
Today 90% of the flowers sold through UK florists, supermarkets and wholesalers are imported not just from Holland but flown from as far afield as Ecuador, Colombia, Kenya and even Ethiopia.
To give you a sense of the figures involved, a study from 2017 calculated bouquet emissions as follows:
- 5 Kenyan roses + 3 Dutch Lily + 3 Kenyan Gypsophila – 31.132 Kg Co2
- 5 Dutch Roses + 3 Dutch Lily + 3 Kenyan Gypsophila – 32.252 Kg CO2
- 5 outdoor grown Uk Snapdragons + 3 Uk Lily + 3 Uk Alstromeria – 3.287 Kg CO2
- 15 stems mixed outdoor UK grown flowers, grown and sold locally (e.g. to Booths Supermarket, Lancashire)- 1.71 Kg CO2”
To give this some context the report continues: “Flying to Paris from London in economy class – 58kg CO2 per passenger.“ (A comparative LCA of the carbon footprint of cut-flowers: British, Dutch and Kenyan – Rebecca Swinn (MSc Thesis, Lancaster University 2017) )
We were horrified that a bouquet of flowers can have as much CO2 as half a flight to Paris from London, particularly since so many local growers are offering beautiful, seasonal flowers.
If you would like to discus an arrangement, have a question or just want to talk about flowers, please drop us a message! We are a friendly team who love people and plants.
